4 Misconceptions about Building Apps with Low Code Platforms

December 21, 2016 / Application Development, BPM, Low-Code,

Low Code Application Development is a modern way of developing and delivering enterprise applications rapidly. Clay Richardson from Forrester Research defines it as the one that enables fast application development and delivery with a minimum of hand coding.

There are several emerging software platforms which facilitate Low Code Application Development. While this new product category is still evolving, there is a lot of confusion around its purpose and fitment in enterprises.

Below is a list of 4 most common misconceptions about Low Code Platforms.

#1 Just a new name for BPM Platforms

While Business Process Management Suites and Low Code Platforms have glaring similarities, they are different in terms what they are built for and who is the target audience.

BPM Solutions are targeted towards bringing operational excellence in enterprises while Low Code Platforms aim to expedite software development and delivery in enterprises.

Refer to our previous blog post BPM vs Low Code Platforms. What is the Difference? which highlights the real difference between the two. We have also created a Point of View Document which you can download.

#2 Low Code is for Mobile App Development

Several enterprises leverage low code platforms primarily for mobile app development, but there is more to it. Mobile just happens to be one of the delivery mechanisms.

Low Code Platforms propagate Build Once, Access Anywhere philosophy which essentially means you need not worry about where the customer or user accesses the application from; the platform seamlessly renders it on their target devices i.e. Desktop, Tablet, Mobile.

#3 Low Code is for Small Apps

This is another misconception. Low Code Platforms are built for scale. There are several success stories where applications built using these platforms are processing millions of transactions with thousands of users concurrently using the system.

This does not mean you cannot build small apps with it. We have several customers who use it to solve simple problems like Claims Reimbursement and we also have other customers who solve mission critical problems like IOT based Machine Deactivation and such.

#4 Low Code is for Developers/ Low Code is for Business Users

There are two schools of thought. Some believe building apps with Low Code platforms is for hard-core developers to make their life easier and others believe Developers are not welcome and they are built solely for business users.

The reality is, it is built for both. The vision behind the platform is to enable development with minimum technical skills. Though, there will be instances where professional developers will need to get involved in integration and customization related activities. The idea is to minimize such efforts as well.

As the name suggests “Low on Code” and high on “Visual Development”. Low Code platforms provide extremely easy to use drag-and-drop visual development environment for Business and IT Users.
